Type Locality and Naming

In boreholes in the area of the city of Turtkul. B.I. Pinhasov in 2000. Stratigraphic scheme of Neogene deposits (Atlas of Stratigraphic Schemes of Uzbekistan, 2000).

Synonym: Turtkul Topitsa, Турткульская т.


Lithology and Thickness

Marine shallow-water clays, variegated-red-colored siltstone (aleurolites), sands, sandstones. Thickness up to 100 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably overlies the Daryalyk Fm

Upper contact

conformably overlain by the Agitmin Fm

Regional extent

Khorezm. Balkhauinsky (Turtkulsky) depression. B.I. Pinhasov distinguished it as an independent Turtkul Fm. Corresponds to the upper part of Sakaraul Fm. Correlated with the upper part of the Sarbatyr Fm.

Fossils

Contains mollusks - Pitar (Calista) italica Defr., P. (C.) cf. erycinoides Lam., P. (Cardiopsis) gigas Lam., Turitella turris Bast.; ostracods - Ilyocypris aff. errabundis Mand., Cytheridea explorata Ros., C. danovi Ros.
